Memphis-Bristol Highway
State Route 1 (HWY 79 – HWY 70)

In the 1920s, the State of Tennessee expanded the network of roads by 6000 miles.  One of these new roads was State Route 1, better known as the Memphis-Bristol Highway.  Completed in 1926, the highway directly connected Brownsville to surrounding cities.  But the highway was also something more.  It became a corridor for cultural exchange between the far corners of the state.  Until the 1960s when Interstate 40 was complete, the highway was the major east-west route through Tennessee. Route 1 also was part of the Broadway of America Highway from California to New York.
